Rose Hybridizing

Rose breeding is an exciting way of creating something that has never been seen before. Like human parents, roses pass on their genetics in random proportions to their children. This is something everyone is capable of. Maybe you could create the next "Brisbane Blush"!

The following articles will Guide you in the right direction. We will update this page regularly, and anticipate adding our own photos into the mix. The Queensland Rose Bulletin (downloadable from this site) also contains articles and updates on our own hybridizing progress.

The Australian Rose Annual

Reading some of the articles from the past annuals has proven to be very interesting. Many of the ideas are still relevant today and in fact are the methods used by many of the Australian and International rose breeders I have talked to. It also gives an insight into the early days of some of the greats of rose hybridizing like Dr Sam McGredy, Herbert Swim and Ralph Moore.

Rose Breeding in Northern Ireland by Sam McGredy, 1957. At 24 Sam gives his insights into how he started hybridizing. Roses we have in our garden of Sam McGredy's are: Dublin Bay

Evaluating Seedlings by RT Hamilton, 1959. Discussion of how to decide which seedlings to keep and which to discard. Robert Hamilton was awarded the TA Stewart Memorial Award in 1953. His best known roses are Legacy and Rod Stillman

Raising New Seedlings by Dr RSR Francis, 1961. A discussion on the hybridizing process as well as the process of sowing and growing seedlings.

The Search for the Perfect Rose by RT Hamilton, 1963. A look at what people are hunting for in new roses. Has anything really changed much?

Rose Hybridizing by Pat Dickson, 1968. A convention lecture on hybridizing from beginning to end.

The Hybridist's Incentive by G Dawson 1969. Why should you breed roses? George was a prolific breeder of hybrid teas who sowed around 20,000 seeds in a season. Imp is his best known rose.

Experiences in Rose Hybridizing by Herbert Swim 1969. Herb talks us through vigour, petallage, mildew resistance, flower forms and more in the selection of parents. Roses we have in our garden of Herb Swim's: Double Delight, Mr Lincoln, Perfume Delight, Brandy
